Still a Hope             Mr. Raymond Chow (Publisher )
In that very year I was still young in Hong Kong when Chinese students of the reopened China era poured out to the Tiananmen Square in protest against the then government with widespread corruption and injustice, as the students held memorial of the Former General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Hu Yaobang. I was paying attention to live broadcast of the Beijing situation everyday wondering whether the leaders were willing to reconcile with the students, whether political reform would come after the economic reform, whether prolong dictatorship ruling in China could give way to democracy. Eventually it ended up with the June 4 Crackdown.
After 31 years, through memory loss therapy the Chinese government has hidden this piece of history from this generation of young people. There is a coworker whose father was a student movement leader and he did not talk about it for 31 years, only that he had been struggling in his living all these years subject to suppression. Many of my mates in Hong Kong those days are now scattered around, still remembering our dreams and visions shattered as we just wanted to get out of Hong Kong in panic of our future.
A friend from Hong Kong send me a clip telling there had not been any crackdown at Tiananmen Square as the students were all gone before the army moved in. She wondered what was the true and actual happening. The Chinese government never have admitted the June 4 happening as such and there have been witnesses who subsequently reverted their testimonies. Unlike social movement in Hong Kong last year where video recording could be handy for worldwide circulation, it could be hard to prove what was the truth back then. But for sure the liberation army did marched in, there were casualties in numbers, many were arrested and many fled. After that, people in China have changed, and collectively lost memory.
As time goes by, evidences emerged to tell not all the news reported then were true. Our memory would fade, but that does not mean there had not been violence, or the fault was with the students protesting for reform, or the June 4 incident would disappear in history. Everyone living in that moment of history certainly knows something has happened.
Since June last year there has been an on-going Hong Kong edition of the June 4 movement. Today we are seeing Americans in strong social protest against the government on racial discrimination issue. Notably different governments have their own way of handling.
It is true that wherever there is no righteousness in society there would be fight back from people. Authority in governance must have regard to the people . If we believe in God, we know only God can be in control with His righteousness and this faith will give us the hope still.
