At the originally scheduled 51st G7 Summit, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was to hold a sideline meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump to discuss tariffs and the future of AUKUS. However, due to the situation in Iran, Trump left partway through the summit, and the meeting was cancelled. For Prime Minister Albanese, this can be seen as a setback.

Since achieving a significant victory in the federal election in May, Prime Minister Albanese has proposed holding an economic summit in August bringing together business leaders, unions, and other sectors to explore Australia’s untapped potential—an initiative that has gained public approval. The U.S. Department of Defense’s proposal to review the AUKUS agreement presents Australia with an opportunity to reconsider whether the agreement—originally signed by former Prime Minister Morrison and former President Biden—is still necessary, especially as the United States moves toward isolationism. However, the situation remains quite uncertain.

Indeed, since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Hamas conflict, the world has deviated from the relative stability it enjoyed after World War II. Starting with the tariff war and technological sanctions against China launched by the Trump administration, and with Trump’s return to the White House, the world is gradually entering a new order where insecurity and conflict have become the norm.

Australia, located in the southern hemisphere, is relatively isolated from other countries and surrounded by generally friendly neighbours, which used to give it a sense of stability. However, as Australian society comprises immigrants from various regions, meaning that global tensions can easily impact social harmony. For example, the Israel-Hamas conflict has led to a rise in anti-Semitic sentiment in Australia, and the situation of Persian-Australians has recently drawn up attention.

Most Chinese-Australians are primarily concerned with Chinese politics, and China’s economic and national rise over the past 20 years has further strengthened its influence over overseas Chinese. Many Chinese-Australians tend to view the world through a Chinese perspective. However, living in Australia means we must understand that other Australians may not share the same worldview or political stance as we do.

It is time for us to look at global affairs from multiple perspectives.

Over the past few weeks, this publication has enhanced the news section of its website, adding daily news commentary in an effort to provide the Chinese community with more information about global and Australian life. We hope to better serve the Chinese community in a wider way.
